|
Owner
of VIP Films, film financier and known diamond
merchant Bharat Shah collapsed in Bombay's JJ
Hospital on Wednesday where he had been brought in
for "routine check-ups." Shah has been
detained in the Thane central jail since January 9
this year on charges of his nexus with dreaded
underworld don Chhota Shakeel. He was brought to JJ
hospital as his health was deteriorating in the jail
and he had complained of many illnesses.

Sources at the Hospital who did not wish to go on
record said that Shah's condition was serious. He
may be shifted to the intensive care unit of the
same hospital if he does not recover with artificial
respiration which is on, it is being said. His
relatives and sons have alleged that the police had
been torturing him and not giving him proper food
even to eat. Shah had been detained under the
Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.
The hearing for his sixth bail application has been
fixed for July 18 in the Bombay High Court. The
court has earlier refused to grant him bail on
grounds that he will tamper with evidence if allowed
to go free.
Shah's son has alleged that the tapes which the
police is quoting which has conversations between
gangster Chhota Shakeel and his father have not been
handed over to the Union Home Ministry or even the
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He has said
that there is every possibility that the state
police was themselves tampering with the evidence.

Bharat Shah, the man known for his benevolence to
countless famous people of Bollywood, has now been
in custody for over six months with no respite at
all. And unfortunately the industry has spurned him
in his hour of need, even those whom he had helped
tide all odds. The bigwigs like Subhash Ghai and
Yash Chopra, once his buddies, have never been in
touch with his son despite repeated requests.
Stars like ShahRukh Khan who were built up by Bharat
Shah from rags to riches have never bothered to even
call upon him or his sons. It is not hidden that
behind most successful men in the industry has been
the hidden hand of Bharat Shah. He has by any
standards pumped in more than Rs 500 crore into the
roaring industry having financed any number of
successful ventures.
Since their father's arrest, his sons Rajeev and
Rashesh now running VIP Films, have released three
films including Nazim Rizvi's Chori Chori Chupke
Chupke which landed Bharatbhai in jail. They are now
planning to release Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas
and Raj Kumar Santoshi's Lajja.
With hopes of an early release seeming dim, the sons
are hoping that the court will at least grant him
bail so that he may get back to running his business
and guiding VIP Films.
