SUN CITY, South Africa (AP) -- Actress Waheeda Rehman won a
lifetime achievement award in the Oscars of Indian movies and said she is proud
to be part of an industry that doesn't discriminate based on class or religion.
"It is an industry where there is no caste or creed," Rehman, a Muslim
in Hindu-majority India, said during Saturday's glittering ceremony for the
International Indian Film Academy awards.
The awards are also known as the Bollywood awards, using the nickname for movies
from Bombay, the world's busiest film production centre.
Rehman, 66, has made more than 25 films, but her biggest successes came 1958 in
Guru Dutt's Pyaasa and Dev Anand's Guide in 1966.
Film producer Shabana Azmi said Rehman had made a difference for all Indian
actresses.
"If females can aspire to strong female roles, it is because Waheeda Rehman
has given them something to aspire to," Azmi said.
Saturday's award ceremony was held in Sun City, South Africa to give
international fans a chance to see their favourite stars, organizers said. The
academy's first award ceremony was held last year in London.
The Best Picture award went to Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, which is Hindi for Tell Me You
Love Me. The movie also garnered Best Actor in a Leading Role for Hrithik Roshan,
as well as Best Direction and Best Music Direction for director Rakesh Roshan.
Karisma Kapoor won Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in Fiza.
