It
is difficult to imagine Sunny Deol pulling a rickshaw while
unscrupulous minions of law chase him.
No, this aint no fragment of my fanciful imagination but a scene from
filmmaker Anil Sharma's forthcoming film Gadar. The film is a
period drama, which harks back at the atrocities committed during
Partition and takes a candid look at the inhuman and insane massacre
of the innocent people through the eyes of its main characters Tara
Singh (Sunny) and his lover Sakina (Amisha Patel).
Sunny who is at present wallowing in the monotony of doing
stereotypical roles believes that the film will mark a refreshing
break in his lagging film career.
The film, produced by Nitin Keni (of Zee Films), also has talented
performers like Amrish Puri, Lillette Dubey, Samar, Ehsaan and Johny
Lever.
It's director Anil Sharma literally recreated India during Partition
in Lucknow, Pathankot, Bikaner and shot many sequences in the mosques
and Imambaras that are still in their pristine beauty.
Knowing that the film was not the usual run-of-the-mill, both Sunny
and Amisha dedicated themselves completely to this project and even
worked for arduous 18-hour shifts daily. In particular, Sunny can't
help talking about the film's climax, which shows a train full of
butchered refugees from Pakistan. For authenticity sake Anil
reactivated an old Canadian steam engine for this sequence.
Although the film casts Sunny in a non-glamorous role he is pretty
much ebullient about its prospects on the box office. In the past Anil
gave a new lease of life to Dharmendra with Hukumat which went
on to become a hit at the marquee. Will he also do the same for Sunny?
